Phil Dunster's Role in British Spy Series 'Strike Back' Before 'Ted Lasso'
Phil Dunster became widely recognized for his portrayal of Jamie Tartt on Apple TV's 'Ted Lasso,' where he plays a soccer player who evolves from an arrogant team member to a more collaborative individual. However, prior to this role, Dunster appeared in the British spy series 'Strike Back.' This series follows Section 20, a unit of the UK's Secret Intelligence Service, as they confront various global threats. Although not universally acclaimed, 'Strike Back' captivated audiences with its action-driven narratives, running for eight seasons from 2010 to 2020.
Dunster featured in Season 6, titled 'Retribution,' where he took on the role of Lance Corporal Will Jensen. In this season, Jensen assists the main team in tracking down Jane Lowry, a former spy who has gone rogue during a covert mission to infiltrate a terrorist organization. The plot thickens as it is revealed that the UK government had funded a terrorist attack to gather intelligence, leading to a series of harrowing events.
In a particularly grim twist, Jensen is captured by Lowry, who tortures him for information about her daughter, resulting in him losing an eye. This brutal scene starkly contrasts with the comedic and uplifting tone of 'Ted Lasso.' After recovering from his injuries, Jensen returns to his duties only to face a tragic end at the hands of his superior, Adeena Donovan, who suffocates him to conceal her involvement in the terrorist plot.
Dunster's family expressed pride in his performance in 'Strike Back,' especially given their military background. The series was inspired by the action novels of Chris Ryan, a former Special Air Service member, reflecting his experiences in the armed forces.
