Ukraine Honors Elon Musk Amid CIA Director's Moscow Visit
President Volodymyr Zelensky has awarded Elon Musk the Order of Freedom, one of Ukraine's highest state honors, recognizing his contributions to the protection of human life and the strengthening of ties between Ukraine and the United States. This honor comes as Ukraine aims to expand the use of Musk's Starlink satellite terminals, which have been crucial for battlefield communications since Russia's invasion in 2022. Starlink has enabled Ukrainian forces to maintain vital communication and has been instrumental in drone operations. Earlier this year, Musk agreed to disable thousands of Russian 'grey-market' Starlink terminals in Ukraine, significantly impacting Russian military operations. Ukraine has expressed interest in using Starlink over Russian territory to target missile launchers that have been attacking Ukrainian cities. While Zelensky mentioned that Musk initially viewed this as a potential escalation, he noted that feedback from Musk has since become more positive. In a separate development, CIA Director John Ratcliffe recently visited Moscow for talks with Russian intelligence officials, although he did not meet with President Putin. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Putin was briefed on the discussions but did not provide details. Peskov emphasized the importance of ongoing contacts between U.S. and Russian intelligence agencies, even during strained relations. Meanwhile, the situation in the Black Sea remains tense, with recent Ukrainian drone attacks disrupting grain shipments and prompting discussions in Russia about potential changes to grain export duties. The attacks have significantly affected operations at key grain terminals, highlighting the ongoing impact of the conflict on global food supplies.
