Ukrainian Drone Strikes on Moscow Resume After CIA Director's Visit
Ukraine resumed drone attacks on Moscow overnight into Wednesday morning, as confirmed by the city's Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. This escalation occurred just hours after CIA Director John Ratcliffe departed from Moscow, following a visit that included a U.S. request for Ukraine to refrain from such strikes during his stay.
Sobyanin reported that at least 10 drones were shot down while approaching the city. Emergency services were deployed to manage the aftermath of the attacks, which resulted in debris falling in various locations. In response to the drone activity, Russia's federal air transport agency, Rosaviatsiya, imposed temporary flight restrictions at three of Moscow's international airports: Domodedovo, Zhukovsky, and Vnukovo.
The drone interceptions were part of a larger claim by the Russian Defense Ministry, which stated that 426 Ukrainian drones were shot down across multiple regions, including occupied Crimea. Reports indicated that one of the targets was a Wildberries e-commerce facility in the Tambov region, where a fire broke out, prompting the company to suspend shipments to the affected center.
In addition to the Wildberries facility, Russian media reported an attack on an oil refinery in the Nizhny Novgorod region, where local defenses managed to repel an assault involving over 40 drones. Damage was reported to industrial facilities and residential areas, with local officials working to address the consequences of the strikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian forces targeted 16 facilities in Russia over the previous 24 hours, emphasizing the need to respond to Russian aggression and reduce its military capabilities. In Crimea, officials reported the interception of three Ukrainian cruise missiles over the Black Sea.
The drone attacks have resulted in casualties, with reports indicating that two individuals were killed and nine injured in various regions of Russia due to drone crashes. In Ukraine, Russian drone strikes led to fatalities and injuries in the Chernihiv region, as well as damage in Sumy and Kherson, although no casualties were reported there.
This series of events underscores the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with both sides continuing to engage in aerial assaults as tensions remain high.
