India and China Commit to Political Settlement of Border Dispute
In a significant diplomatic engagement, India and China have reaffirmed their commitment to seeking a political resolution to their long-standing border dispute. The discussions took place in Beijing between Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who serve as the designated special representatives for the border talks mechanism. The Indian Foreign Ministry reported that both officials engaged in a candid and in-depth exchange of views regarding the boundary question, agreeing to continue their efforts in light of their broader and long-term interests.
The talks highlighted the positive momentum in resuming people-to-people exchanges and cross-border activities, including the ongoing Kailash Manasarovar pilgrimage and the revival of border trade through Himalayan passes. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the progress made in implementing agreements reached during previous meetings between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, particularly during their encounters in Kazan, Russia, and Tianjin, China.
The Kazan meeting marked the first formal bilateral dialogue between Modi and Xi in four years, following a skirmish in the Ladakh region in 2020 that resulted in casualties on both sides. During that meeting, the leaders agreed to utilize the special representatives mechanism and foreign minister dialogues to address the border issue and maintain peace in the border areas.
The recent Beijing discussions were conducted under the strategic guidance of Modi and Xi, characterized by a constructive and forward-looking spirit. India underscored the necessity of maintaining peace and tranquility along the border to foster the continued development of bilateral relations.
In addition to the border discussions, Doval and Wang addressed various bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest, as both nations prepare for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and the BRICS summit in New Delhi. Reports indicate that Xi is expected to attend the BRICS meeting with a substantial delegation. Doval also met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng prior to the special representative talks, further emphasizing the importance of these diplomatic engagements.
