Ajit Doval Engages in Border Talks with Chinese Officials

Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday regarding the border situation between India and China, as well as the enhancement of bilateral relations. Doval emphasized that the meeting aligns with the directives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping, who have provided clear guidance for improving ties at both high and operational levels. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made over the past year towards restoring normalcy in relations.

The talks are particularly significant in light of the upcoming BRICS Summit, scheduled to take place in New Delhi next month, where Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to participate. Doval and Wang Yi serve as the designated special representatives for the border talks mechanism established in 2003, which serves as the primary channel for negotiations on border issues and other mutual interests.

During his two-day visit to China, Doval also met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, where they discussed strategies to bolster peace in border areas and enhance economic, political, and multilateral relations, as reported by the Indian Embassy.

Ahead of these discussions, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated the importance of maintaining 'peace and tranquility' along the border as a foundation for fostering good relations with China. Relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors had deteriorated following a skirmish in the Ladakh region in 2020, which resulted in casualties on both sides.

Recently, however, India and China have been working to normalize their relations, evidenced by the resumption of direct flights and updates to the visa regime. Additionally, India has begun allowing Chinese investments in critical sectors of its economy, and border trade, which once linked remote Himalayan communities to the Silk Route, was resumed earlier this month.

Chinese President Xi Jinping's attendance at the BRICS summit, along with a large delegation, has not yet been officially confirmed, but India, which currently holds the rotating chair of the BRICS group, is actively engaged in diplomatic preparations for the event.
