Ajit Doval Meets Chinese VP Han Zheng on Border Peace and Relations
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing to discuss strategies for maintaining peace and tranquility along the India-China border. The discussions aimed to strengthen bilateral relations across various platforms, including economic and political spheres. This meeting is significant as it precedes the 25th round of special representatives talks concerning the India-China boundary question, which is set to take place later in the day between Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The Indian Embassy in China confirmed that the meeting focused on enhancing peace in border areas and improving overall bilateral ties, in line with agreements made by the leaders of both nations. Doval's visit to Beijing, which began on Monday, is part of ongoing efforts to address the long-standing boundary dispute that spans approximately 3,488 kilometers.
The upcoming talks are particularly important as they follow years of heightened tensions along the Line of Actual Control, especially after the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. Both countries are now seeking to stabilize their relationship through dialogue and cooperation. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has characterized the special representatives mechanism as a crucial channel for negotiations on boundary issues and a vital platform for addressing mutual interests.
Previous discussions between Doval and Wang Yi have been described as constructive, with both sides acknowledging progress towards normalizing relations. The latest round of talks is expected to cover not only the boundary question but also broader bilateral, regional, and international issues. This diplomatic engagement is seen as part of a larger effort to build on high-level interactions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who have emphasized the importance of cooperation over rivalry.
Despite the positive momentum, sensitive issues such as the boundary dispute and the status of Arunachal Pradesh remain contentious. Both Doval and Wang are designated special representatives for the boundary talks, which, while not resolving the dispute, serve as an essential channel for managing tensions and facilitating communication between the two nations. The discussions also come ahead of Xi's anticipated visit to New Delhi for the BRICS summit, which could provide further opportunities for dialogue between the two leaders.
