2028 BMW X7 M Performance Model Spotted During Testing
The second-generation BMW X7, referred to as the G67, is making headlines as it undergoes testing at the Nürburgring, showcasing its heavily camouflaged design. This model is no longer just speculation, as numerous spy photos and videos confirm its imminent arrival. Former CEO Oliver Zipse has indicated that the three-row luxury SUV will be refreshed next year, and the prototype seen in testing appears to have all its production body panels in place.
Despite the camouflage, it is clear that the new X7 will maintain the split-headlight configuration characteristic of the current G07 model. Observers have noted similarities to the facelifted 7 Series, which is expected given the shared design language between the two models. Additionally, the new X7 will likely feature discreet door handles similar to those on the new X5, with automatic doors anticipated as a new convenience feature.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the prototype is its quad-exhaust system, indicating that this is the M Performance model, specifically the X7 M60 xDrive, which will be powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine. Unlike the latest X5, which offers a plug-in hybrid variant, the X7 will not include a PHEV option, focusing instead on traditional powertrains.
The rear design of the vehicle is also noteworthy, with a black horizontal band across the tailgate suggesting a potential split tailgate design. However, there is some skepticism about this feature, as previous prototypes have led to changes in final production designs. The rear lights on the prototype are provisional, and it remains to be seen if the new X7 will adopt the “X” motif found in the headlights of the new X5.
Looking ahead, an upscale ALPINA version of the X7 is expected to launch around 2028, which will likely enhance the luxury SUV experience without encroaching on the territory of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. This version may feature two-row seating to provide more comfort for rear passengers.
The powertrain options for the new BMW X7 will be diverse, including six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, alongside the robust V8 for the M Performance variant. For the first time, BMW will also introduce a fully electric version, the iX7, with an ALPINA variant to follow, marking a significant step in the brand's electrification strategy.
