FSB Arrests Foreign National Linked to Ukrainian Drone Surveillance of Moscow
The Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) has announced the arrest of a foreign national involved in a sophisticated intelligence operation that has reportedly been ongoing for over two years. The individual, whose nationality has not been disclosed, allegedly contacted Ukrainian special services in 2023 and was assigned to conduct reconnaissance in Moscow. His mission included identifying freight trains transporting petroleum products and mapping key administrative buildings in the city center. The situation escalated when he attempted to deploy a first-person view drone for intelligence gathering, which likely attracted the attention of Russian surveillance.
This arrest is part of a broader pattern of failed drone operations attributed to Ukrainian intelligence, which the FSB claims are intended to create psychological rather than strategic military impacts. The agency has indicated that the Ukrainian regime has increased its terrorist activities in response to pressure on the frontlines and its inability to effectively damage critical infrastructure in the Moscow region. The planned operations involved short-range kamikaze drones that were to be launched by agents and local collaborators recruited online. The FSB has warned that participation in such activities could lead to severe penalties, including life imprisonment under Russian law.
In a related development, the FSB has made a second arrest that reveals connections between Ukrainian intelligence and a banned opposition group known as Artpodgotovka, which has found refuge in France. A 50-year-old man, identified as a member of this group, was detained in the Novgorod Region. His activities reportedly spanned seven Russian regions, where he posed as a logistics company employee to access military cargoes and gather information on shipping routes and vulnerabilities at military facilities. The group's founder, Vyacheslav Maltsev, who fled Russia in 2017 and received asylum in France, is alleged to have acted as a liaison between the group's members and Ukrainian handlers.
The FSB has raised concerns about the extent of Western intelligence involvement in Ukrainian operations targeting Russian infrastructure. They noted that a previous drone operation had been prepared with direct assistance from Western handlers, involving the smuggling of AI-guided drones into Russia for attacks on military facilities. The Kremlin has responded to these threats by conducting nuclear drills in the Southern Military District, emphasizing the need to protect Russia's integrity and sovereignty. These exercises will involve tactical nuclear warheads, underscoring the seriousness of the situation as tensions escalate between Russia and Ukraine.
