Cleric Calls for Youth Engagement in 2027 Elections, Citing Davido's Influence

As the campaigns for the 2027 general elections begin, Apostle Eugene Ogu, the former National Security Director of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, has encouraged Nigerian youths to follow the example set by Afrobeat star Davido in civic engagement during the recent Osun State governorship election. Speaking in Port Harcourt, Ogu reflected on the election held on August 15, expressing concern for Davido's safety due to his vocal support for his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, who emerged victorious in the election.

Ogu praised Davido for his courage and active involvement in the electoral process, urging both authorities and citizens to ensure his protection. He also raised questions about reports suggesting that notable figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and businessman Aliko Dangote, had contacted Davido during the election, allegedly asking him to remove a social media post. Ogu warned that such calls from influential individuals could have significant implications and called for scrutiny regarding the circumstances surrounding these alleged contacts.

The cleric highlighted the importance of the Osun voters' participation and Davido's role, suggesting that it demonstrated a collective resistance against electoral manipulation. He expressed hope for the upcoming elections but cautioned against any actions that could jeopardize Davido or other celebrities who might become influential voices in the electoral landscape.

Ogu also addressed the severe economic challenges facing the country, likening the situation to biblical Samaria, where hunger led to desperate measures. He claimed that economic hardship has driven some young Nigerians towards crime, including kidnapping and armed robbery, while others have resorted to prostitution for survival. He expressed alarm over the rising instances of sexual exploitation in universities and increasing suicide rates, attributing these issues to financial strain and unmet family obligations.

He urged the youth to actively participate in the 2027 elections by voting, safeguarding their ballots, and monitoring the collation process until the final results are confirmed. Ogu criticized the actions of political leaders, including the Senate President, who he claimed, along with numerous APC governors and political thugs, attempted to undermine the election results through financial inducements and intimidation. He commended the resilience of the Osun electorate and Davido, labeling them as heroes in the fight for electoral integrity.

Furthermore, Ogu condemned the practice of using food and money to sway voters, asserting that it has contributed to the worsening living conditions in Nigeria. He urged citizens to learn from the Osun election and reject any attempts to manipulate the electoral process in the upcoming elections. He also advised against allowing religious and ethnic biases to influence voting decisions, advocating for support based on candidates' competence and integrity.
