Ecuador's Intelligence Chief and Five Americans Die in Kenya Helicopter Crash
A tragic helicopter crash in central Kenya has claimed the lives of Ecuador's intelligence chief, Michele Sensi-Contugi, and five American citizens. The incident occurred at 09:13 AM local time in Samburu County, shortly after the helicopter departed from the Loisaba wildlife reserve. Officials confirmed that all seven individuals on board, including the pilot, did not survive the crash.
Images from the scene shared by the Kenya Red Cross showed the crash site engulfed in flames. Fredrick Kabunge, director of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department, stated that the helicopter was engaged in a scenic flight for tourists. The identities of the deceased, aside from Sensi-Contugi and his wife, have not been disclosed.
Sensi-Contugi, 42, was appointed head of Ecuador's National Intelligence Center in 2024 and was known to be a close associate of President Daniel Noboa. The US State Department has acknowledged the deaths of five American citizens in the crash and is providing consular assistance to their families. The US Embassy in Kenya is in contact with local authorities regarding the incident.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority stating that inquiries are ongoing. The Kenya Red Cross has reported that response operations at the crash site are being hindered by challenging terrain and an active fire. This incident follows a previous helicopter crash in western Kenya earlier this year that resulted in six fatalities, including a member of parliament.
