Angie Nixon Defeats Alex Vindman in Florida Senate Primary Upset
Progressive Florida state Representative Angie Nixon has achieved a notable upset in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, defeating Alex Vindman, a former aide on the National Security Council. This victory, confirmed by projections from multiple networks, positions Nixon to face Republican Senator Ashley Moody in the upcoming general election.
Vindman, a retired lieutenant colonel and Iraq War veteran, gained national attention for his testimony during the impeachment hearings of former President Donald Trump in 2019. He was widely regarded as the frontrunner in the primary race. Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, campaigned vigorously as a progressive challenger, aiming to showcase the viability of left-wing politics in Florida.
Throughout her campaign, Nixon targeted Vindman’s relatively recent relocation to Florida, making his residency a focal point of her criticisms. Her stance on Israel has also been a significant aspect of her platform, as she has openly expressed anti-Israel sentiments and received support from Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a prominent critic of Israel and member of the progressive 'Squad.'
In November 2023, following the October 7 massacre, Nixon introduced a resolution in the Florida House advocating for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. During the debate, she claimed that Israel had already caused the deaths of 10,000 Palestinians and questioned how many more would be enough. This resolution, however, faced overwhelming opposition, resulting in a vote of 104-2 against it.
Nixon was also scheduled to participate in a campaign event organized by the Democratic Socialists of America, featuring Tlaib. However, the event was canceled by The Venue Fort Lauderdale, a Jewish-owned establishment, due to security concerns and a review of the event's promotional materials. The venue's management emphasized their commitment to the Jewish community and the importance of their values.
In other Democratic primaries in Florida, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is projected to secure the nomination in the newly redrawn 20th District, which has been represented by Black lawmakers for over three decades. Additionally, Rep. Jared Moskowitz is expected to defeat a Democratic socialist candidate in the 25th District.
