Hamas Delegation Meets Egyptian Intelligence Chief to Discuss Gaza Plan
On August 16, a delegation from Hamas, headed by Khalil al-Hayya, met with Hassan Rashad, the chief of Egyptian intelligence, to discuss the implementation of a post-war plan for Gaza. This meeting was reported by Egypt's state news agency and highlighted Hamas's commitment to a 15-point plan initially proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The plan aims to facilitate governance in Gaza, with Hamas indicating its readiness to disarm in favor of a technical committee overseeing the region's administration.
Despite these developments, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly rejected the plan, insisting that Israeli forces will not withdraw from Gaza until Hamas is fully disarmed. The Hamas delegation arrived in Egypt on the evening of August 15, just ahead of Jared Kushner's planned visit to the region.
During the discussions in El-Alamein, the Hamas representatives aimed to address the latest developments in negotiations and efforts to ensure Israel adheres to the ceasefire agreement. Al-Hayya emphasized Hamas's commitment to the agreement, contingent upon Israel's compliance.
Additionally, arrangements were being made for a meeting between the Hamas negotiating team and U.S. officials, including Nickolay Mladenov, the high representative for Gaza, to discuss obstacles to the agreement. The talks also involved ongoing communications with mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey to encourage Israel to fulfill its commitments under the proposed plan.
Kushner's upcoming visit to Israel and Egypt is intended to bridge the gaps in the Gaza plan, which has faced significant opposition from Netanyahu. The situation remains fluid as both sides navigate the complexities of the ceasefire and future governance in Gaza.
