Iran May Respond Militarily as U.S. Tightens Economic Sanctions, Analysts Warn
Tensions between the United States and Iran are escalating as President Donald Trump demands compensation for decades of damages, leading to predictions of a potential military response from Iran. Analysts suggest that Iran's economy is collapsing under the weight of U.S. sanctions, and as a result, military strikes could be imminent this fall. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company reported that two vessels were struck while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, although there were no injuries and the situation was deemed under control by the UAE foreign ministry.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that Washington is preparing to implement unprecedented economic measures against Iran, stating that significant announcements would be made soon. Analysts believe that Iran may resort to guerrilla-style attacks to exploit the U.S. troop presence in the Gulf. Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, noted that as sanctions tighten, Iran is likely to increase military pressure in response to U.S. economic policies.
Ben Taleblu emphasized that Iran could use military actions to counteract the economic pressure, suggesting that attacks on ships, U.S. bases, and Gulf infrastructure could become more frequent. He pointed out that the regime would prioritize targets based on their immediate and economic value, potentially leading to a broader conflict in the region.
The warnings come amid stalled negotiations between Washington and Tehran, with no discussions about extending the ceasefire agreement. Tehran has insisted that the U.S. return to the nuclear pact and set a timeline for compliance. The interim memorandum of understanding, signed in June, aimed to halt military operations, but talks have since unraveled.
Hossein Taeb, the head of Iran's Basij paramilitary force, claimed that the Strait of Hormuz remains under Iranian control, contradicting Trump's assertion of U.S. dominance over the waterway. Analysts suggest that Iran's strategy involves a combination of military escalation and diplomatic pressure to counter U.S. actions, aiming to avoid granting the Trump administration a perceived victory in the ongoing conflict. The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the complexities of their relationship, with the deadline for negotiations approaching.
