CIA Expresses Doubts Over Iranian Assassination Plot Against Trump
The US intelligence community expressed skepticism regarding reports of an Iranian plot to assassinate President Donald Trump by shooting down Air Force One as it departed a NATO summit in Türkiye. According to the Washington Post, this assessment was communicated to the Trump administration, yet the Secret Service decided to take precautionary measures by covertly moving Trump to a different aircraft.
On the day of the summit, Trump unexpectedly switched from his newly acquired Boeing 747-8 to the older Air Force One. However, he did not remain on the latter aircraft for long, as he was secretly transferred to a smaller military plane that took him to the UK. Upon arrival, he reboarded the older Air Force One to give the impression that he had been on it throughout.
CIA analysts were reportedly doubtful about the credibility of the intelligence regarding the assassination plot, which was derived from Israeli sources rather than US-generated information. An unnamed intelligence official conveyed to the Post that the reports were viewed as low confidence.
This incident has sparked significant controversy, with many journalists and officials feeling uninformed about Trump's sudden maneuver and the perceived threat. CNN senior reporter Aaron Blake remarked that reporters were treated like "unwitting and unknowing decoys very much in the line of fire."
Trump acknowledged the plane switch, stating that he was following the recommendations of the Secret Service and military. He emphasized that he had to comply with their directives regarding his travel arrangements.
The situation coincided with the announcement of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt's departure, which she attributed to a desire to spend more time with her family. Speculation has arisen that her resignation may be linked to the chaotic circumstances surrounding the decoy aircraft, adding to the intrigue of the unfolding events.
