UK Deputy National Security Adviser Concludes Visit to Lebanon
Dame Barbara Woodward, the UK Deputy National Security Adviser, concluded a two-day visit to Lebanon on July 2, 2023. The visit aimed to strengthen cooperation between the UK and Lebanon, focusing on regional stability and reaffirming the UK's commitment to Lebanon's security and sovereignty. Accompanied by Ambassador Hamish Cowell, Dame Barbara met with key Lebanese leaders, including Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri, and Lebanese Army Commander General Rodolphe Haykal.
Discussions centered on the UK's support for Lebanon's efforts to extend state authority across its territory and strengthen state institutions, aligning with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. Dame Barbara expressed strong support for the Lebanese government and welcomed the recent trilateral framework agreement involving Lebanon, Israel, and the United States. This agreement is seen as crucial for advancing the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon, disarming Hizballah, and ensuring the full deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) throughout the country.
The visit underscored the UK's readiness to assist in this diplomatic process through humanitarian and development aid, as well as its role as a leading supporter of the LAF. The UK continues to provide support to the LAF, which is recognized as Lebanon's sole legitimate defender, through initiatives focused on border security, training, and equipment. Dame Barbara praised the LAF for its efforts in securing the Syrian border and maintaining stability amid significant challenges.
This visit comes at a critical juncture as Lebanon and its partners strive for a sovereign and peaceful future. The UK remains committed to supporting diplomatic efforts that aim to achieve lasting peace and security for both Lebanon and Israel. Dame Barbara emphasized that diplomacy is essential for reaching a political settlement that includes the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the disarmament of Hizballah, and the full deployment of the LAF across Lebanon. The UK continues to work closely with Lebanese and international partners to advance peace and protect civilians.
