East Libya Military Intelligence Chief Major-General Fawzi al-Mansouri Killed
Major-General Fawzi al-Mansouri, who led military intelligence for the eastern Libyan National Army (LNA), was killed in a targeted assassination on Monday. Authorities reported that an improvised explosive device detonated as he entered his vehicle outside his home in the Hawari district of Benghazi. The Eastern Libyan government's Prime Minister, Osama Saad Hammad, condemned the act, calling it a treacherous terrorist act and vowed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assassination. He emphasized that there is no place in Libya for those who raise arms against the state or engage in acts of terrorism. Al-Mansouri had been appointed to his position in 2024 and his assassination underscores the persistent security challenges in Libya, where rival factions continue to exert influence despite a ceasefire established in 2020. Since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has been divided between eastern and western factions, with the LNA, led by Khalifa Haftar, controlling much of the east and south, while the internationally recognized Government of National Unity operates from the capital, Tripoli.
