Suisun City Declares Emergency Following Cyberattack Disrupting 911 Services
Suisun City, located northeast of San Francisco, has declared a local emergency following a cyberattack that significantly disrupted its 911 call system and other public safety services. The city first reported the attack on Friday, noting that it affected operations at City Hall and various public safety departments. In response to the incident, the city council convened a special meeting on Saturday to officially declare a state of emergency.
The cyberattack was caused by malicious software that infected and compromised the city's IT systems. This incident impacted critical public safety operations, including the routing of 911 calls, police and fire dispatch, and other essential city services. To mitigate the threat and preserve evidence for a federal investigation, the city decided to shut down its entire IT network.
While the specifics of the attack remain unclear, there is speculation about whether it involved ransomware, which can encrypt computer systems and demand payment for access. Suisun City, which has a population of approximately 29,000, has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the attack. Additionally, there are concerns about potential threats from Iranian hackers targeting water utilities across the United States.
Despite the disruption, city officials have reassured residents that there is no immediate threat to public safety. All public safety services are still operational, with dispatchers continuing to take calls through the Solano County dispatch center. Both the Suisun City Police Department and Fire Department are actively responding to calls for service.
The city is collaborating with federal agencies, including the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, as well as the California Office of Emergency Services, to ensure the continuity of emergency services and to investigate the cyberattack thoroughly.
The declaration of a state of emergency will allow Suisun City to quickly access emergency support services and seek reimbursement for costs incurred due to the cybersecurity incident.
