Apple Concerned by Data Leak from Supplier Tata Electronics
Apple is reportedly concerned about a recent data breach involving Tata Electronics, a key manufacturing partner based in India. The breach, attributed to a cyberattack, resulted in the theft of confidential documents that have since been shared on the dark web. Among the stolen information are details regarding the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, including lists of suppliers, parts, and images of the devices.
The leaked data includes detailed documents featuring component designs and specifications, with at least six files revealing hundreds of components for the iPhone 18 Pro. These files bear "confidential" Apple watermarks and include Apple codenames for the new models, alongside images showing the devices undergoing drop tests. Reports indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to resemble its predecessor, the iPhone 17 Pro, with minimal design changes, primarily a slimmer Dynamic Island.
Tata Electronics plays a significant role in Apple's supply chain, providing various parts and assembling some iPhones in India as part of Apple's strategy to diversify manufacturing away from China. The leaked information also connects suppliers to specific iPhone components, a detail Apple typically keeps confidential.
The cyberattack was disclosed by Tata Electronics last week, which reported that the ransom group World Leaks had shared over 200,000 files containing sensitive information about both Apple and Tesla. These files have reportedly been circulating on the dark web since at least June 10.
In response to the breach, Tata Electronics has restricted internal access to sensitive systems and engaged a global consultant to conduct a forensic audit. However, the incident raises concerns about the potential impact on Apple's relationship with Tata. Apple is currently investigating the breach and collaborating with Tata to implement long-term security improvements.
