Selangor Halts Parking Summons Amid Cyberattack on Apps
Selangor's Flexi Parking and Smart Selangor Parking mobile applications have been down for over a day due to a cyberattack that compromised the operator's system. As the operator, Suasa Efektif, works to restore the applications, concerns have arisen regarding parking summonses for motorists unable to pay during this period.
Local councils in Selangor have been advised to refrain from issuing summonses while the Selangor Intelligent Parking (SIP) system is temporarily shut down. Datuk Ng Suee Lim, the state local government committee chairman, confirmed that the cyberattack affected parking payment platforms across 64 local councils nationwide, necessitating the immediate suspension of SIP operations.
Ng stated that the public may encounter difficulties in parking payments in the coming days due to ongoing repairs. He emphasized that the request to halt summonses is an official measure to alleviate the burden on motorists during this downtime. The breach involved sensitive data transactions, prompting a forensic recovery process to ensure user data integrity.
The cyberattack, which occurred over the last 48 hours, disabled digital parking payments not only in Selangor but also in several other states utilizing the same platform. Ng clarified that the vulnerability did not originate from the state’s SIP private concessionaire, Rantaian Mesra, but rather from the centralized Flexi Parking platform, which had recently taken over the management of parking across major Selangor cities and municipalities, including Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, and Selayang. This transition is believed to have contributed to the widespread disruptions.
