USSOCOM Requests Air Loitering Munition for Fixed-Wing Aircraft
Headquarters USSOCOM is actively seeking industry input for an Air Loitering Munition (ALM) as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the Special Operations Forces (SOF) strike portfolio. A Sources Sought Notice has been issued by the Acquisition, Technology & Logistics (AT&L) division, specifically through the Program Executive Office-Fixed Wing (PEO-FW). This initiative aims to identify capabilities that extend beyond the current Stand-Off Precision Guided Munition (SOPGM) offerings.
The ALM is intended for deployment from SOF fixed-wing air platforms, utilizing various release mechanisms such as lugged munitions or Common Launch Tubes (CLT). The specifications for the munition include a maximum weight of 95 pounds, with specific dimensions for both CLT and lugged configurations. For CLT, the munition should have a diameter of 5.9 inches and a maximum length of 42 inches. For lugged or other release mechanisms, the requirements include a maximum length of 90 inches and a diameter not exceeding 9 inches, compatible with BRU-71 or BRU-78 release systems.
The munition's seeker assembly must be a passive system with limited radio frequency emissions and integrated Automatic Target Recognition (ATR). The payload should maximize kinetic warhead capabilities while adhering to the weight restrictions. The munition is expected to operate effectively in both contested and non-contested environments, featuring Intra Missile Communications.
Key performance metrics include a minimum range of 75 nautical miles from the launch point to the loitering point, with launch altitudes between 5,000 and 30,000 feet MSL. Once at the loitering point, the munition should maintain a minimum loitering time of 40 minutes at altitudes between 500 and 3,000 feet AGL. The operational speed should range from 50 to 100 knots during cruise and loitering, with a minimum dash speed exceeding 100 knots during attack profiles.
The system must support government-owned FANTOM Core collaborative mission autonomy for command and control, utilizing machine-to-machine (M2M) API integration or Battle Management System (BMS) compatibility. Additionally, the munition should be capable of operating within typical environmental profiles associated with SOF aircraft.
Interested parties are required to submit a white paper detailing their capabilities by July 27, 2026, at 12:00 PM EDT, with cost targets aimed at achieving best value at quantities of 500, 1,000, and 3,000 units.
