John Brennan Sues Trump Administration Over Russiagate Investigation

John Brennan Sues Trump Administration Over Russiagate Investigation

Former CIA Director John Brennan has initiated legal action against President Trump, the Justice Department, and senior officials, contesting a criminal investigation linked to his role in the Russiagate probe. Filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the lawsuit alleges that Brennan has been "vindictively singled out for investigation and prosecution."

Brennan is seeking a court order to ensure that the White House, Justice Department, Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), and the CIA preserve materials and communications that may be pertinent to his legal challenges against any potential criminal charges.

The case has been assigned to Judge Jia Cobb, who was appointed by President Biden and has a history of rulings against the Trump administration. Notably, she previously blocked efforts to expedite deportations and the deployment of the National Guard in Washington, D.C.

In the 46-page lawsuit, Brennan's legal team contends that the current administration has adopted a strategy of using criminal investigations to target perceived adversaries. The filing states, "This Administration has adopted a policy of using criminal process and prosecution to punish the President’s perceived adversaries." It further argues that the evidence of vindictiveness against Brennan is substantial, citing ongoing investigations into other officials as part of a broader pattern.

Brennan's lawsuit references two federal investigations: one concerning the grand conspiracy probe related to the Russiagate allegations and another investigating whether he misled Congress regarding the Steele Dossier's inclusion in the Intelligence Community Assessment on Russian election interference.

His attorneys assert that Justice Department officials have engaged in inappropriate actions to construct a case against him, including making public statements that suggest a predetermined belief in his guilt and allegedly removing prosecutors who resisted pursuing charges. They also accuse the department of attempting to manipulate the judicial process to find a favorable venue for the investigation.

In response, a Justice Department spokesperson remarked on the irony of Brennan accusing others of a "retribution campaign," while not commenting on the specifics of the investigation. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, named in the lawsuit, has previously indicated that the investigation is robust, with numerous subpoenas and witnesses involved, suggesting that significant revelations will soon be made public regarding the actions taken against the Trump administration over the past decade.
