CIA Forms Task Force to Influence Cuban Government
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has reportedly created a task force focused on influencing the Cuban government to enact the economic and political reforms sought by the Trump administration. According to a report from The New York Times, this task force will enhance the CIA's ability to mobilize financial, technical, and human resources directed at Cuba. It will comprise officers with expertise in spy recruitment, intelligence analysis, cyber operations, and covert influence strategies.
In recent months, the U.S. has increased its military and intelligence presence in Cuba, indicating a shift in focus towards the island, even as tensions with Iran remain unresolved. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has identified Cuba as a priority issue. The U.S. government has intensified sanctions against Cuba, including an executive order signed by President Trump in January that imposed tariffs on oil imports to the island. This order has led to a state of emergency, citing a perceived threat to U.S. national security from Cuba, which has exacerbated the island's fuel shortages and adversely impacted essential services such as electricity, transportation, food production, healthcare, and education.
