Indonesia and Thailand Enhance Cooperation Against Transnational Crime
Indonesia and Thailand have taken significant steps to bolster their defense and security collaboration, particularly in the fight against transnational crime. This commitment was formalized during a high-level meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on August 3, 2026. The leaders agreed to enhance joint intelligence sharing, financial tracking, and targeted operations aimed at dismantling cross-border criminal networks that threaten regional stability.
Central to this partnership is the revitalization of existing bilateral mechanisms, including the Indonesia-Thailand High-Level Committee and the Indonesia-Thailand Security Dialogue. President Prabowo highlighted the importance of optimizing these channels to strengthen cooperation on security and defense issues. Both leaders identified cross-border crime, particularly human trafficking, drug trafficking, and online scams, as critical areas requiring immediate and coordinated action.
During the meeting, President Prabowo expressed gratitude to Thailand for its assistance in rescuing nearly 1,000 Indonesian citizens who fell victim to online scam syndicates. He acknowledged this support as a testament to the strong ties between the two nations. Prime Minister Charnvirakul responded by noting that around 500 additional Indonesian victims are still in Thailand, assuring that his government would expedite their safe return.
To prevent future incidents, Indonesia and Thailand agreed to enhance operational cooperation through real-time intelligence exchange, joint criminal investigations, and monitoring of suspicious financial activities across borders. Additionally, President Prabowo advocated for the establishment of a Transnational Referral Mechanism (TRM) to facilitate the rapid identification and safe return of trafficking victims, ensuring they receive adequate legal protection.
Prime Minister Charnvirakul outlined three primary security challenges facing both countries: online fraud, human trafficking, and illicit drug networks. He committed to strengthening Thailand's law enforcement capabilities and enhancing intelligence sharing to effectively combat these threats. This renewed partnership marks a pivotal moment in Indonesia-Thailand relations, reflecting a shared commitment to addressing the complexities of transnational crime in Southeast Asia.
