Trump Accuses China of Election Interference and Blackmail Attempts
Former President Donald Trump has made serious allegations against China, claiming that the country interfered in the 2020 presidential election. In a primetime address on July 16, Trump asserted that China executed the largest compromise of election data in history, alleging that voter information from 18 states was either bought, stolen, or hacked. He further claimed that China may have attempted to blackmail a White House official by obtaining derogatory information about the individual.
Trump referenced an unredacted portion of an intelligence file dated June 25, 2020, which reportedly warned a White House official that Beijing had derogatory information on him, aiming to compel a restrained approach towards China. He argued that these documents indicate an effort by Chinese officials to influence the election in favor of Joe Biden, fearing Trump's tough stance on Beijing.
In his address, Trump also mentioned 'burn bags' from the Obama administration, which he claimed were used to destroy information provided by former President Barack Obama. Roger Stone, a longtime adviser to Trump, characterized the president's claims as a declaration of political war against foreign interference and called for investigations by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Department of Justice, the FBI, and the CIA. Stone emphasized the need to address complacency and bureaucratic concealment regarding foreign threats.
In response to Trump's allegations, Liu Pengyu, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, firmly denied any interference in U.S. elections, stating that China has never and will never engage in such actions. The Chinese foreign ministry labeled Trump's claims as entirely fabricated.
Despite the denials, Trump has continued to express concerns about the 2020 election, alleging that members of the U.S. intelligence community suppressed reports indicating that China obtained voter registration records for 220 million Americans. Stone warned that the effects of China's actions might be invisible until they become irreversible, asserting that Trump is leading the charge against these threats.
Trump's address followed a recent visit to China, where he was accompanied by several billionaires, including Elon Musk, Tim Cook, and Jensen Huang, to discuss opportunities for collaboration. This visit occurred after Trump imposed significant tariffs on Chinese goods in 2025, leaving the relationship between the two nations in a precarious state.
