Fauci Grilled on Gates' Security Clearance During Senate Hearing
In a Senate hearing on July 29, Dr. Anthony Fauci was questioned by Senator Rand Paul about Bill Gates' security clearance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Paul disclosed that Gates held a Q security clearance from 2014 to 2021, a designation equivalent to a Department of Defense Top Secret clearance, granted by the Department of Energy due to his involvement with TerraPower, a nuclear innovation company.
The hearing took a contentious turn when Senator Rick Scott asked Fauci if he had collaborated with Gates on global health initiatives or vaccines, or if he was aware of Gates' partnership with China on sensitive research. Fauci, citing his Fifth Amendment rights, declined to answer, a move he repeated over 100 times throughout the session.
Fauci, who previously served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has faced ongoing scrutiny from Republicans, including calls for perjury charges from Paul and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Despite being pardoned by President Biden, Fauci's connections to Gates have drawn criticism, particularly regarding the origins of the COVID-19 virus.
In 2021, Gates expressed surprise at being the subject of conspiracy theories alongside Fauci, stating, "Nobody would have predicted that I and Fauci would be so prominent in these really evil theories." He also praised Fauci's handling of the pandemic.
Fauci has been a focal point of criticism from Paul, who accused him of being obsessed with seeing Fauci prosecuted. During the hearing, Fauci remarked on Paul's fixation, stating, "The sole reason he is calling me before this committee is to prompt me to say something, anything, that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up, in his words, 'behind bars.'"
Former President Trump has also criticized Fauci, labeling his ideas as 'crazy' and asserting that the COVID-19 virus originated from a lab in Wuhan, a claim Fauci has consistently disputed. The debate over the virus's origins continues, with no definitive evidence supporting the lab leak theory as of yet.
