Bitcoin Policy Institute Highlights CCP Influence on US AI Projects
The Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) recently took its advocacy to Capitol Hill, addressing the influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on US AI infrastructure development. During a fireside chat on July 29, BPI Head of Research Sam Lyman and journalist Robby Soave shared research indicating that CCP-linked operations have blocked or delayed approximately $23.6 billion in proposed AI investments across 14 states. This research, published in two reports in May and June 2026, highlights 21 campaigns that have hindered AI infrastructure projects, including 10 data center moratoria and one permanent ban on construction. The initial report, released on May 18, 2026, identified two main vectors of influence: CCP-affiliated state media amplifying opposition to AI projects and a nonprofit network funded by Neville Roy Singham, a tech entrepreneur with ties to Beijing. A follow-up report detailed the grassroots opposition organized by groups within Singham's funding network, including the Party for Socialism and Liberation. The overlap between Bitcoin mining and AI data centers, both reliant on cheap energy and infrastructure, underscores the significance of these regulatory battles. As interest from Congress grows, lawmakers are calling for deeper investigations into the funding and connections of the Singham network. Notably, the discussions did not mention cryptocurrency or digital assets, focusing solely on the implications for AI development.
