Iraq Plans Defense Strategy Following US-Saudi Airstrikes
Iraq's National Security Council convened on Wednesday to address the recent US-Saudi airstrikes and announced plans to develop a comprehensive defense strategy. The council emphasized the need to enhance security measures across the country, safeguard Iraq's sovereignty, and prevent any external threats from utilizing Iraqi territory. Following an emergency meeting, the council instructed the Foreign Ministry to document the airstrikes and ensure compliance with international law and the UN Charter. This response comes after US Central Command reported that US and Saudi fighter jets targeted what they described as "Iran-aligned terrorists" in eastern Iraq. These strikes were a reaction to drone attacks on US bases and Saudi infrastructure that occurred within the previous 72 hours. The Popular Mobilization Forces reported that at least two individuals were injured in an airstrike on their headquarters, while they claimed that the strikes resulted in 20 fatalities and 32 injuries across various facilities in Iraq. The Iraqi government has reiterated that addressing such attacks falls under its exclusive jurisdiction and responsibility, underscoring the importance of national sovereignty in the face of external military actions.
