GlobalFoundries Secures Up to $375 Million for Quantum Tech Development
GlobalFoundries has entered into a letter of intent with the US Department of Commerce to receive up to $375 million in funding under the CHIPS and Science Act, specifically targeting advancements in quantum technology and silicon photonics. This funding will facilitate the establishment of Quantum Technology Solutions, a platform aimed at scaling the domestic manufacturing of quantum processor units and their essential components. The initiative encompasses the development of various qubit technologies, including silicon photonics, superconducting, and trapped ion methods.
In a notable aspect of the agreement, the Commerce Department plans to acquire a strategic minority equity stake of approximately 1% in GlobalFoundries, indicating a long-term commitment to the partnership. This is not GlobalFoundries' first engagement with the CHIPS Act; the company previously secured up to $1.5 billion in awards in 2024, which were allocated to enhance production capabilities at its facilities in New York and Vermont.
With a decade of investment in silicon photonics technology, which utilizes light for data transmission instead of electrical signals, GlobalFoundries is now redirecting its expertise towards quantum applications. The company is collaborating with a range of ecosystem partners, including PsiQuantum, Quantinuum, Diraq, Equal1, and Microsoft Quantum, each contributing unique knowledge across different qubit modalities.
The implications for national security are significant, as quantum computers, once fully developed, have the potential to break encryption standards that safeguard critical information, including banking transactions and military communications. The $375 million award underscores the US government's prioritization of quantum computing, and the equity stake taken by the Commerce Department signals a commitment to supporting this emerging technology sector beyond mere financial assistance.
