Erdoğan Declares Disinformation a National Security Threat
During a communication summit in Ankara on July 28, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared disinformation a national security threat, asserting that it undermines social trust and democracy. He described disinformation as an asymmetrical element that weakens societal unity and vowed to continue the government's efforts to combat it. Erdoğan stated, "We will continue our fight against disinformation with this understanding, resolutely, in line with the vital importance of the issue."
The summit saw participation from 425 experts who engaged in working groups to develop proposals addressing current challenges related to disinformation. A final declaration is anticipated to be signed on July 29. Erdoğan pointed out the significant influence of social media platforms on public attention and reactions, noting their role in distorting both present and historical narratives. He remarked, "The concept that suffers the most in this process is, undoubtedly, truth."
Later that day, Erdoğan was scheduled to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, marking al-Zaidi's first regional diplomatic engagements since taking office in May. Al-Zaidi's visit to Ankara follows his trips to the United States and Iran, with Saudi Arabia expected to be his next destination. The meeting aims to strengthen bilateral ties, which have evolved into a strategic partnership during the previous administration. Erdoğan had previously supported al-Zaidi's candidacy and invited him for discussions on enhancing bilateral relations.
The timing of the visit is particularly significant amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, as well as restrictions affecting the Strait of Hormuz. Iraq, which is among the countries most impacted by these conflicts, is pursuing diplomatic initiatives to restore regional stability. The discussions in Ankara are expected to cover key areas of cooperation, including trade and economic ties, with potential memorandums of understanding to be signed. Türkiye’s Communications Director Burhanettin Duran noted that the visit would allow for a comprehensive review of relations between the two nations and discussions on regional and global developments.
