BMW i4 Convertible Spotted Testing Ahead of 2028 Launch
Recent spy photos have confirmed the development of the BMW i4 Convertible, marking a significant step forward for the brand as it prepares for a potential launch in 2028. This model, which will complement the existing combustion-engine 4 Series Convertible, features a two-door, four-seat configuration with an electrically folding fabric roof, a departure from the retractable hardtops of previous models.
The i4 Convertible is built on the Neue Klasse platform, similar to the new i3 Sedan, and appears to have most of its final body panels in place, although the headlights and taillights seen in the prototype are provisional and will be updated in later testing phases. The overall shape and size of these elements are expected to remain consistent, with only the internal lighting design likely to change.
The prototype showcases aerodynamic two-tone wheels and red brake calipers, suggesting an M Sport Package. The camouflage on the vehicle creates the illusion of a traditional grille, but it will feature a closed-off horizontal grille that merges with the headlights, echoing the design of the i3.
Unlike the previous generation's hardtop, the i4 Convertible will utilize a fabric roof, which is becoming the industry standard due to its lighter weight, lower production costs, and more efficient use of trunk space when folded. Early observations indicate that the i4 Convertible will embrace a design philosophy that emphasizes simplicity, with a reduction in physical controls compared to earlier models.
The interior is expected to reflect the design elements of the i3 Sedan, adhering to a “less is more” approach. While there are hopes for a more spacious back seat due to the dedicated EV platform, the prototype suggests that rear passenger space may still be limited, a common characteristic of convertibles.
As the first spy shots emerge, the i4 Convertible is not expected to debut until 2028, following the rollout of the iX4 crossover-coupe later this fall and the i3 Touring in 2027. The i4 Convertible will coexist with the combustion-engine 4 Series Convertible, which is projected to remain in production until mid-2029, although the future of gas-powered models beyond that remains uncertain.
