McFarland Advocates for Gradual Regime Change in Iran Amid Diverging Views
On a recent episode of Fox Business Network's "Varney & Co.," KT McFarland, who served as Deputy National Security Adviser under Trump, discussed her perspective on Iran's political landscape. She argued that the best approach to addressing the situation in Iran is through a gradual regime change, which she described as a "slow-rolling coup." McFarland believes that as Iran's economy continues to struggle, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) may lose control, allowing civilian leaders, such as those in parliament, to gain more influence.
McFarland pointed out that the ongoing conflict has economic implications for the United States, suggesting that a prolonged war could be beneficial as it affects oil prices. She noted that when oil prices rise to around $100 a barrel, a ceasefire often occurs, leading to a decrease in prices while the U.S. builds up its military presence in the region. She highlighted the blockade on Iranian ports, which she believes is exerting significant economic pressure on Iran, further supporting her argument for a shift in power dynamics within the country.
When asked about the relationship between the U.S. and Israel regarding Iran, McFarland acknowledged a shared objective of eliminating Iran's nuclear program. However, she indicated that their interests diverge after that point. Netanyahu has expressed a desire for regime change in Iran, while Trump has taken a more cautious stance, suggesting that regime change is not necessarily the immediate goal. McFarland noted that despite the ongoing conflict, Iran has not directly attacked Israel, and Israel has not yet engaged in the war. She mentioned Netanyahu's threats towards Iran, implying that Israel is prepared to respond if provoked, particularly targeting high-ranking members of the IRGC.
