British Army to Receive New Spy Drones in £400 Million Investment
The British Army is poised to significantly enhance its operational capabilities with a new investment of up to £400 million aimed at equipping soldiers with advanced spy drone technology. The Tekever AR5 surveillance drones have been selected for their ability to gather intelligence around the clock, thereby improving troop safety and effectiveness on the battlefield. This investment not only aims to bolster the Army's capabilities but also supports job creation at Tekever's UK manufacturing sites, reinforcing the country’s defense manufacturing sector.
The AR5 drones are designed to carry up to 50 kilograms of surveillance equipment, including cameras and sensors, and offer improved flight duration compared to previous systems. This capability will provide commanders with real-time intelligence, crucial for making informed decisions in combat situations. The initial order will consist of six AR5 drones, with a total of up to 24 expected to be delivered by 2029, marking a transition from the aging Watchkeeper drones that have been operational since 2014.
The decision to adopt the AR5 drones reflects a commitment to maintaining a technological edge in surveillance and reconnaissance, particularly as these drones have already proven effective in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The investment is part of a broader strategy to support British troops while driving re-industrialization and fostering innovation within the UK’s defense sector.
The contract will sustain and create hundreds of jobs at Tekever’s UK facilities, highlighting the defense sector's role in the UK’s growing technology landscape. The initiative is seen as a vital step in ensuring that the British Army remains equipped to face emerging threats, with a focus on building sovereign capabilities that keep pace with adversaries.
The new drone capability is expected to begin entering service later this year, pending contract signature and final approvals, with support guaranteed for at least five years and options for extension. This investment underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging defense as a catalyst for economic growth and technological advancement in the UK.
