Bnei Brak Spy Seeks High Court Intervention for Prison Conditions
Asher Binyamin Weiss, currently facing serious charges in a high-profile espionage case linked to Iranian operatives, has submitted a petition to Israel's Supreme Court. He is requesting changes to his detention conditions, specifically citing a lack of family visits for the past 22 months and a ban on reading newspapers. Weiss argues that reading newspapers is his sole activity while incarcerated, and he seeks to have this right restored along with the ability to receive family visits.
This is not Weiss's first legal action regarding his treatment in prison. Recently, he filed another petition alleging abusive treatment by prison staff. In that petition, he detailed incidents where prison guards reportedly used stun grenades against inmates without provocation, as well as instances of physical violence, forced handcuffing, and threats involving weapons.
The High Court has determined that Weiss's previous allegations should be addressed by the District Court. Weiss is charged with collaborating with Iranian agents to surveil an Israeli nuclear scientist, allegedly with the intent to facilitate an assassination. He faces multiple charges, including contacting a foreign agent and passing sensitive information to Israel's adversaries. During a month-long period of cooperation with an Iranian operative, Weiss reportedly used a GoPro camera to document the scientist's residence and vehicle, sending the footage back to his handler to further the assassination plot.
