Angels Dismiss Scout for Spying on Rockies Coaching Staff
The Los Angeles Angels have dismissed scout Justin Prinstein, who was caught filming members of the Colorado Rockies' coaching staff prior to a series in early June. Prinstein, who referred to himself as 'The Baseball Spy' on social media, was observed using his phone to record the Rockies' coaches from the scout seating area at Coors Field. Although filming by scouts is generally permitted, MLB rules prohibit the use of technology beyond what is available during a sanctioned game broadcast to steal or decode signs. After the league informed the Angels of the violation, general manager Perry Minisian promptly terminated Prinstein's employment.
Minisian also extended an apology to the Rockies' front office, which includes president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes. Sources indicate that both teams believe Prinstein acted independently, and the Angels are not expected to face any sanctions from the league.
In response to the Astros sign-stealing scandal, MLB implemented stricter regulations in 2020 regarding sign-stealing and the use of video. These changes, made in collaboration with the players' union, established stringent limits on the use of electronic and visual-enhancement devices for identifying signs.
During the series in question, which took place in Anaheim, the Rockies managed to win two of the three games. Before joining the Angels, Prinstein had experience working with the Cincinnati Reds and two professional teams in Korea, in addition to his writing and podcasting endeavors related to baseball.
