Bitdefender Launches RealCheck to Combat Deepfakes and Fraud

Bitdefender has unveiled RealCheck, a standalone application aimed at helping consumers evaluate the authenticity of videos circulating on digital platforms. This tool is particularly relevant as deepfakes have surged in popularity, raising concerns about their potential use in financial fraud, credential theft, and defamation.

With deepfakes becoming a favored tactic among cybercriminals, Bitdefender RealCheck offers a means for users to discern fact from fabrication before trusting or sharing video content. Deloitte forecasts that generative AI could lead to fraud losses of $40 billion in the U.S. by 2027. A Bitdefender survey of 7,000 consumers revealed that deepfake scams are the top security concern, with social media emerging as the primary channel for successful scams. Alarmingly, research indicates that consumers can accurately identify high-quality deepfakes only 24.5% of the time.

Available for both Android and iOS devices, Bitdefender RealCheck allows users to submit video links or upload files for analysis. The tool employs a structured, multi-layered approach to assess videos, recognizing that not all altered content is malicious—some may be satirical or for entertainment purposes. Users receive a comprehensive report detailing the likelihood of manipulation, potential deceptive intent, and transcript-level indicators. This nuanced analysis provides context rather than a simple yes-or-no answer, enabling consumers to make informed decisions about the videos they encounter.

Ciprian Istrate, Senior Vice President of Operations for Bitdefender's Consumer Solutions Group, emphasized the growing threat posed by cybercriminals who exploit AI to deceive consumers and manipulate perceptions. He noted that deepfakes, once relatively easy to spot, have become increasingly difficult to detect without assistance. With RealCheck, Bitdefender aims to equip consumers with a reliable tool to identify manipulated videos and understand their intent, thereby enhancing their protection in the digital landscape.
