Qatar's Role in Supporting Iran Amid Sanctions Revealed
An intelligence document published by Kan News reveals Qatar's covert assistance to Iran in evading international sanctions. Compiled by a foreign intelligence agency, the report outlines Qatar's role as a key channel for enhancing Iran's economy, trade relations, and military capabilities since the 2018 withdrawal from the nuclear agreement and following the October 7 massacre.
Since 2018, Qatar has reportedly worked to expand maritime trade routes with Iran, resulting in a notable increase in bilateral trade. The cooperation has also extended to the energy sector, including an agreement for electricity exports from Iran to Qatar. The document claims that Qatar is pivotal in efforts to unfreeze Iranian funds, specifically mentioning $6 billion held in Qatar as part of negotiations with the United States. Understandings between the central bank governors of both countries regarding the release of these funds were reportedly reached as early as October 2024, although the U.S. blocked the transaction at that time. The report raises concerns that these funds could be utilized to support terrorism instead of fostering economic development.
Beyond economic interactions, the intelligence report alleges that Qatar has contributed to Iran's military buildup. It cites data from Qatar's National Planning Council indicating a consistent flow of dual-use materials to Iran. These materials reportedly include oils suitable for rocket fuel production, explosives, and naval systems, along with significant quantities of components that could be used in rockets and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The report also mentions the supply of aluminum rods and profiles for UAV airframes, as well as internal piston engines applicable in drone manufacturing. The intelligence document concludes that Qatar's activities pose a direct challenge to the security interests of the United States, Israel, and Arab states, recommending concrete measures to curb these actions.
