ZA/UM Announces Layoffs Following Underwhelming Game Launch
ZA/UM has confirmed layoffs impacting up to 32 employees following the release of its latest title, Zero Parades: For Dead Spies, which launched on May 21. Despite receiving critical acclaim, the game's commercial performance fell short of expectations, prompting the studio to make difficult staffing decisions. The announcement was made on July 17 via the studio's X account, where they stated that the game's performance did not support the current size of the studio. SteamDB data indicates that the game peaked at 3,177 concurrent players shortly after launch but has since dropped to around 500 peak concurrent players daily. This situation reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry, where several studios have recently undergone significant layoffs. For instance, Xbox Game Studios has seen 1,600 job losses, with more expected in the coming year. Similarly, Sony's Bungie has also conducted layoffs following the shutdown of Destiny 2, and 1047 Games laid off staff after the disappointing launch of Empulse. In their announcement, ZA/UM expressed gratitude for the contributions of the affected employees and emphasized their commitment to maintaining artistic standards as they navigate this transition. They also encouraged other companies to consider the departing staff for future opportunities.
