Army Enhances Drone Warfare Capabilities Through Cyber Collaboration
At Fort Gordon, Georgia, developers from the Hardware Section of Cyber Solutions Development-Maryland, part of the 780th Military Intelligence Brigade (Cyber), have partnered with the 11th Cyber Warfare Battalion’s CSD-Tactical to enhance the Army's drone warfare capabilities. This collaboration, which lasted over a year, aligns with the Army's "Transforming in Contact" initiative aimed at modernizing battlefield technology. The significance of drone warfare has grown, especially following the war in Ukraine, prompting various nations to advance their drone technologies.
The project required expertise across multiple technical domains, including embedded systems, radio-frequency engineering, 3D printing, and networking systems. Developers from both CSD-Maryland and CSD-Tactical engaged in extensive collaboration through shared code repositories, numerous remote meetings, and several temporary duty assignments.
The culmination of this effort was marked by a demonstration on March 26, attended by the Secretary of the Army, Honorable Daniel P. Driscoll, and other senior leaders. During this event, CSD-Maryland showcased their capabilities by deploying three autonomous 3D printed vertical take-off and landing drone systems, along with the corresponding software solutions developed in-house. This demonstration was conducted alongside the 11th CWB’s Expeditionary Cyber and Electromagnetic Activities Teams, highlighting their role in enhancing battlefield lethality through cyberspace operations.
Following the demonstration, the project was transitioned to the 11th CWB, allowing the battalion to further develop and implement these capabilities. The implications of this initiative extend beyond cyber units, as it is designed for potential use by Army brigade combat teams, illustrating the narrowing gap between cyber operations and traditional combat roles. As battlefield technology evolves, the importance of building combat-ready formations increases, whether through new capabilities developed by organizations like CSD-Maryland and CSD-Tactical or through training in cyber warfare tactics by electromagnetic activities teams.
By staying at the forefront of emerging strategies, including drone warfare and expeditionary cyber operations, the Army’s cyber forces are ensuring that Soldiers are prepared to confront any adversary in a complex and dynamic operational environment.
