Trump Considers Ground Forces in Iran Amid Escalating Tensions
US President Donald Trump is reportedly weighing a significant escalation of military operations against Iran, including the potential deployment of ground forces. This consideration follows high-level briefings with top national security advisors, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. The strategic options presented to Trump include intensifying airstrikes, launching ground operations to capture key islands in the Persian Gulf, and targeting a fortified tunnel network known as Pickaxe Mountain, which may support covert nuclear activities.
During a Situation Room briefing on Tuesday evening, Trump reviewed these military possibilities, focusing on the occupation of strategic territories along the Strait of Hormuz, such as Kharg Island, and broader strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure. This briefing concluded several days of consultations with senior officials, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine.
Despite Trump's public and private assertions favoring a diplomatic resolution, negotiations with Tehran have stalled. Iran has resisted demands to relinquish its enriched nuclear stockpiles, even after months of direct strikes and a brief interim agreement that allowed limited oil exports. This deadlock has led Trump to explore more aggressive military options aimed at compelling Iranian compliance and curbing Houthi and Iranian threats to international maritime traffic.
Should Trump authorize ground operations or strikes on Pickaxe Mountain, it would represent a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, raising concerns about increased gas prices and political ramifications ahead of the midterm elections. However, administration sources indicate that Trump is cautious about deploying troops and has previously moderated his stance on full-scale territorial seizures.
These military considerations come after a fifth consecutive day of US strikes against Iran, initiated when a temporary ceasefire collapsed following Iranian attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. In response, the US has reinstated its naval blockade.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump warned that US strikes on Iran would intensify unless serious negotiations commence. He stated, "We're going to hit them very hard tonight, we're going to hit them very hard tomorrow night, we're going to hit them very hard the night after, and then next week it gets really bad for them because next week comes the power plants, next week comes the bridges." Trump emphasized that military actions would persist until he deems it sufficient, indicating a strategy to degrade Iranian capabilities significantly.
