DTCC to Launch Tokenization Trial for Major Securities in October
The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), which clears approximately $114 trillion in assets annually, is preparing to launch its DTC Tokenization Service in October 2026. This service will initially focus on tokenizing shares of Microsoft, the Invesco QQQ Trust, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, and the iShares 0-3 Month Treasury Bond ETF. These assets represent significant segments of the market, including a leading tech company, the Nasdaq 100, the S&P 500, and short-term government debt.
Major financial institutions such as Vanguard, BlackRock, and JPMorgan are participating in the pilot phase of the tokenization trial, which will involve around 40 firms actively testing the system. A working group of over 50 companies, formed in May 2026, has contributed to the design of the service, showcasing a collaboration between traditional finance and crypto-native firms.
The tokenized securities are intended to function within existing regulatory frameworks, having received a no-action letter from the SEC in December 2025 that provided the necessary regulatory approval. While the initial focus is on four specific tickers, DTCC's tokenization initiative aims to encompass a wider array of assets, including Russell 1000 stocks, major ETFs, and US Treasuries.
These tokenized assets are expected to trade alongside their conventional counterparts on established exchanges such as Nasdaq and the NYSE. Currently, traditional stock settlements operate on a T+1 cycle, meaning trades take a full business day to settle. However, the introduction of real-time or near-real-time settlement through tokenization could significantly reduce the capital tied up in margin requirements for institutional investors and market makers, leading to fewer failed trades and a more efficient trading system that does not require downtime on weekends and holidays.
The inclusion of short-term Treasuries via the iShares 0-3 Month Treasury Bond ETF highlights the growing interest in tokenized government debt. This segment has seen rapid growth in on-chain finance, with early movers like Ondo Finance and Franklin Templeton's on-chain fund leading the way in tokenized Treasuries. As the trial progresses, the implications for the future of securities trading and settlement could be substantial, potentially transforming how these assets are managed and traded in the financial markets.
