2027 BMW i3 Touring Prototype Showcases Extended Design Features
The 2027 BMW i3 Touring prototype has been seen testing, showcasing a longer and more sloped tail than previously suggested by the automaker's teaser. The vehicle, wrapped in black sapphire paint and camouflage primarily at the front and rear, provides a clearer view of BMW's electric 3 Series wagon. This marks the first substantial look at the Touring since the i3 sedan's debut in March.
The camouflage covers the front bumper, kidney grille surround, and tailgate, while the sides and most of the roof remain exposed. This design choice indicates that the silhouette is not a closely guarded secret, as the proportions from the A-pillar forward are already known. The rear, however, is where the design becomes intriguing. The tail appears to extend longer than that of the sedan, with a roofline that slopes down toward the taillights, suggesting a focus on aerodynamics, potentially at the expense of cargo space.
The front end is expected to mirror the i3 sedan, featuring similar headlights and kidney grille designs, along with a consistent color palette. Inside, the Touring will likely adopt the Neue Klasse design, highlighted by a 17.3-inch central display and a panoramic screen that spans the windshield.
While BMW has not disclosed cargo dimensions or specific trim details, the prototype's ride height and lack of visible exhaust tips suggest it may not represent the high-performance M60 variant. As testing progresses through 2026, more prototypes with reduced camouflage are anticipated, providing further insights into the vehicle's design.
The Touring shares its platform with the i3 sedan, which recently launched in Europe. The i3 50 xDrive variant offers a robust 463 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque, powered by two motors and a 108.7-kWh battery. It supports rapid DC charging, allowing for a 10-80% charge in just 21 minutes. The sedan boasts a WLTP range of up to 912 km, and the Touring is expected to perform similarly once final aerodynamic and weight figures are established. The i3 M60 xDrive, rumored to produce around 630 horsepower, is also in development, but its production is not expected to begin until March 2027, making the Touring a later addition to the lineup.
Pricing details remain unconfirmed, but the i3 50 xDrive sedan starts at €65,900 in Germany, which is significantly lower than the iX3 50 xDrive. The Touring is likely to be priced similarly, with an additional premium for its wagon configuration as is typical for BMW.
