Lebanese Security Arrests Alleged Israeli Spy Linked to Hezbollah
Lebanese security forces have apprehended a man closely associated with Hezbollah, alleging he conducted intelligence operations for Israel that facilitated precision strikes against the Iran-backed group. A judicial source, who requested anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, confirmed that a high-level Israeli agent was arrested last week in Beirut. The detainee is accused of providing actionable intelligence that contributed to the assassination of several Hezbollah officials, including four senior security leaders. His close ties to the inner circle of Hezbollah were deemed essential for the operations.
The suspect was intercepted at Beirut's international airport while preparing to board a flight to Iraq. Investigators suspect that his frequent trips to Iraq, where his wife lives, were part of a broader scheme. From Iraq, he reportedly traveled to Turkey to meet with operatives linked to the Israeli Mossad, supplying them with information on potential targets in Beirut.
Lebanon has a history of conducting counter-espionage operations, with numerous individuals arrested in recent years on suspicion of collaborating with Israeli intelligence. The ongoing financial crisis in Lebanon since 2019 has reportedly facilitated recruitment efforts, often conducted online. In a related development, over 30 individuals were detained in October for allegedly providing Israel with targeting coordinates for Hezbollah assets during the current conflict.
Under Lebanese law, individuals convicted of treason for spying on behalf of Israel face severe penalties, including prison sentences of up to 25 years. Since September 2024, Lebanese security officials have reported the arrest of 41 individuals suspected of espionage for Israel, highlighting the ongoing tensions and security challenges in the region.
