Wanted Notice Issued for Vastaamo Hacker Aleksanteri Kivimäki
Police have issued a nationwide wanted notice for Aleksanteri Kivimäki, who was convicted for his role in a cyberattack and attempted extortion against the Vastaamo psychotherapy center. The Eastern Uusimaa Police confirmed that the notice was issued at the request of the Criminal Sanctions Agency after the Supreme Court denied Kivimäki leave to appeal his sentence on Monday. If found, Kivimäki is to be arrested and taken to Vantaa Prison to serve his sentence.
Superintendent Mikko Minkkinen of the Helsinki Police stated that officers would detain Kivimäki upon encountering him. However, he could not confirm whether an international wanted notice had been issued. Kivimäki's lawyer, Peter Jaari, indicated that he believes his client is currently abroad and is not in prison.
Kivimäki was released from prison in September 2025 after authorities determined that he risked spending an excessive amount of time in pre-trial detention, which could have entitled him to state compensation. In February, the Helsinki Court of Appeal sentenced him to six years and 11 months in prison, an increase from the original sentence of six years and three months handed down in 2024.
The Vastaamo data breach is noted as the largest criminal case in Finnish history by the number of victims, with Kivimäki having hacked into the psychotherapy provider's database in 2018 and obtaining the personal data of approximately 33,000 patients. In 2020, he attempted to extort money from both the company and its clients. The wanted notice follows the Supreme Court's refusal to allow Kivimäki to appeal his prison sentence.
